The Friendship

Friendship, the fifth volume of The House of Happiness by Steve Tiambo, traces the story of Ike's parents from Bamiléké country to Essen and Brussels, then their return to Yaoundé alongside tonton Paul, the father's childhood friend. It explains why that friendship became a threat, and follows Ike's bond with Flavy, Paul's daughter.

Ike takes up the story again to answer a question left hanging: why is his father suddenly so afraid of his old friend? To explain, he goes far back, to the hills of western Cameroon and the Bamiléké people, to the village market where a shy young man notices a high-school girl selling fruit and vegetables. So begins a love story that will lead through Essen, in Germany, and then Brussels.

Coming home was meant to be a rebirth. Tonton Paul, the father's childhood friend turned influential figure in Yaoundé, welcomes the family with a dazzling smile and finds them the Odza house. The two families become inseparable, and Ike finds a confidante in Flavy, Paul's daughter. But rumours circulate about the source of this meteoric success, and the mother, attuned to spiritual things, grows wary of a certain gathering.

This volume is about bonds: a couple who promised themselves to each other, a friendship between two men forged in the village, a childhood closeness. Ike, still young, cannot make sense of the adults' silences and seeks refuge exactly where he has been forbidden to go. A night of mourning at Flavy's house will open his eyes. The story casts earlier volumes in a new light, and loyalty becomes a matter of survival.

Two childhood friends, a warm homecoming… and the beginning of a story of loyalty and betrayal.

When they came home, they were warmly welcomed by Uncle Paul, a childhood friend of my father’s. The two men shared an unbreakable bond, forged by memories of the early years they had spent in the same village. While my father had chosen an academic path in Germany, Uncle Paul had opted for India, where he had studied finance, dreaming of launching a chain of clothing stores in Cameroon. Their friendship had survived the years and the distance, as strong as on the very first day, every reunion a joyful return to the carefree days of their youth.

But behind this homecoming lay a more complicated story, in which the dreams and realities of two once-inseparable men would soon run up against unexpected challenges. Why, then, was my father so frightened of this old friend, to the point that their precious friendship now seemed under threat? It is a story of loyalty and betrayal, of the way life’s paths can change even the strongest friendships.

In the unfathomable depths of Africa, where ancient forests whisper forgotten secrets and ancestral spirits keep watch in the shadows, a tragic story was beginning to take shape, marked by my father’s return to his homeland. That return, which should have meant a new beginning for our family, instead marked the start of a series of sinister events, haunted by invisible forces that would plunge us into an abyss of terror.

The story continues in the book.
