My Model

"My Role Model", volume 6 of The House of Happiness by Steve Tiambo, is a portrait of the narrator Ike's father: a Cameroonian lawyer from a small village, generous and demanding. In Yaoundé in January 2000, the return of Uncle Laka, accompanied by a stranger dressed in black, gradually pushes this admired man into silence.

January 2000. The new millennium opens full of promise, but the House of Happiness in Yaoundé has grown quieter: the eldest sister is studying abroad, the second lives on her campus, and their mother still hasn't come home. Left behind are Ike, about to turn sixteen, his cousin Jack, an aunt who came to help, and their father. This volume is Ike's tribute to him, and he promises the reader a brighter chapter than the ones before.

It is the portrait of a man people look up to: the eldest of eight children, he left a village in western Cameroon for high school in Mbouda, studied law in Yaoundé and then earned a master's degree in Europe, becoming the first lawyer his village ever produced. Generous, strict about the value of money, he keeps telling his family they are lions. Yet Ike also sees the migraines, the hiccups that have plagued him for years, and the void left by his absent wife.

Then Uncle Laka returns, evicted from his flat and taken in yet again, and a neighbour's money vanishes. When he turns up at the gate with a stranger dressed all in black, the mood in the living room shifts at once. Curtains drawn, laughter in the local dialect, a back room kept locked: the father withdraws into himself, and Ike watches a closed door, sensing something he cannot yet name. A bright volume that darkens with every page.

One evening on the balcony, a reserved father finally finds the words he had never said to his son.

When we had finished talking, he took a worn leather wallet from his pocket and handed me my pocket money for the week. Looking at the notes, I noticed there were a few extra, far more than usual. Surprised, I pointed out this unusual generosity, and he replied that I knew why. With the carefree confidence of youth, I tried to guess the reason, joking that it was surely because I was a good child, well-behaved and obedient, along with all the other slightly conceited ideas that crossed my mind at that moment.

He turned towards me then, a faint smile on his lips, but his eyes shone with a deeper emotion. He laid his hand on my shoulder, a hand heavy with experience, sacrifice and love, and looked me straight in the eye. “Above all, it's because I love you and I'm proud of you,” he told me with disarming sincerity.

Those words, simple yet so full of meaning, touched me to the very core of my being. For the first time, I understood that behind his expectations and his lessons lay an immense love, a pride that needed no words or grand gestures to be expressed. That moment, sitting there with him on that balcony, has remained engraved in my memory. It was a moment of deep connection, a moment of truth when everything seemed clear, when a father's love revealed itself in all its silent splendour.

The story continues in the book.
